Catabathmos vallis devexa in Aegyptum finit Africam. Sallustius vocat declivem altitudinem, sed non addit, in quam partem vergat ista declivitas. Inquit enim in Iagurthino, c. 17. Africam habere ab ertu satis declivem altitudinem; quem locum Catabathmon incolae appellant. Καταβασμόν vocat Aeschylus in Prometheo, ridicule vero ponit ad fontes Nili. Sed ignoscendum hoc Aeschylo, qui non maior inter Graecos fuit Geographus, quam fuerunt apud Romanos vel Seneca, vel Lucanus. Non recte vero interpres Solini hunc Catabathmum, qui terminus fuit Cyrenaicae, arenosum fuisse colligit, ex loco illo Stephani, Κατάβαθμος τόπος, εν Λιβόη, μεταξὺ τοῦ Α῎μμωνος καὶ τοῦ Παραιτονίου.
